Don't stop me from wearing my contact lenses! BCLA Presidents Session According to the BCLA CLEAR publications, a large number of eyes can be fitted with mass-produced contact lenses. However, the selection process and determining suitability can be a clinical challenge. In this peer review session, we will delve into how clinical observations, patient feedback, and ocular surface health can impact our decision-making when fitting contact lenses and will explore strategies to improve contact lens performance for patients at a higher risk of dropping out, including those with ocular pathology.

Simple Dry Eye Assessment – Illuminating the Way with Your Slit Lamp During this skills workshop delegates will be guided on how to undertake an effective, systematic slit lamp assessment of patients presenting with symptoms suggestive of dry eyes. Delegates will become confident in techniques to assess the eye lids and the tear film to help make an accurate diagnosis of a dry eye condition, which can then help them to formulate a logical management plan.

Engaging and retaining contact lens wearers This peer review will encourage conversations about engaging the reluctant CL patient with empathy and proactively reducing early drop-out by challenging ECPs on the possible reasons our current drop-out rate isn't changing. The aim is to change behaviour around communicating contact lens features and benefits to patients to suit their lifestyle needs.

Soft custom contact lenses: A last resort or panacea? With an estimated 25% of lens wearers wearing a lens of sub optimal diameter, this hands on practical workshop will look at how the HVID measurement gives us the capability to calculate corneal sagittal height which then enables us to accurately choose the optimum base curve and diameter when fitting soft lenses. By identifying who falls out of the ‘one size fits all’ category we can introduce the option of a customised lens earlier in the patient journey enabling us to improve our conversion rate and minimise drop out.
